Novacta Therapeutics currently has four active therapeutic programmes based on its proprietary lantibiotic / bacteriocin derivatives.
In each of its programmes, Novacta Therapeutics' is creating novel lantibiotic / bacteriocin variants, optimised to meet a target profile for a particular indication. Novacta Therapeutics' lantibiotics are first-in-class compounds, offering the advantages of novel, well-characterised modes of action, no cross resistance with 'gold standard' drugs (such as vancomycin) and being less prone to development of resistance.
Novacta's bacteriocins are novel variants that demonstrated the potential for broad spectrum activity including Gram-negative pathogens
Novacta has selected a development candidate for the treatment of C. difficile infection which entered pre-clinical safety testing. The compound is much more selective for C. difficile than currently available therapeutics which may translate into improved therapeutic properties (especially recurrence). Novacta Therapeutics' novel approach to the treatment of C. difficile infection has been validated by the granting of a £3.5M ‘strategic translation award' by The Wellcome Trust in January 2008.
Novacta Therapeutics' programme for Gram-positive systemic infections is progressing towards candidate selection, whilst potential agents for Gram-negative infections are in the lead evaluation stage.
